I've just re-watched the first two episodes of Strawberry Panic!, this time on Japanese DVD, & I have to say that I don't think I'll be watching anymore anime on YouTube, because the visual quality is beyond sucky. I couldn't believe how many little nuances in the anime I missed!

That's true. It's gotten some what better since they've chopped up the eps into 3 to 5 parts to maintain some quality. But if your looking for DVD quality, it obviously doesn't do the justice to that.

Gundam Seed Destiny (The episodes that don't revolve around Jesus Yamato)

and

Macross 7

Since Google bought YouTube, I expect some of these things to be brought down.

Dear lord no!

Just thinking about the quality of the visuals and audio makes my world suddenly seem high def.

Friends don't let friends watch anime on youtube. I know that back in the day we watched EoE which was a 100mb file (yikes!) and we all had .RM files.....but those were the dark ages. The times before RIAA began sueing everyone. Nowadays we have running water, indoor plumbing, and HD XVID.

Actually most of my anime comes from a netflix clone. Downloading has nothing on anime dvd libraries.

Apart from that, I have had no time or real inclination to watch the ton of fansubs available.

EDIT: grammar
why were they banned?

I went to youtube to find out, but got bored at the intro.

But I saw some comments which suggested that one of them was banned due to a scene that would remind too many people of columbine or something. (Timing would be everything)

Well, it may just be a matter of time before global internet standards start using sufficient bandwidth for decent downloads. Optical transmission seems to be the most promising at the moment.

Just think ... in the early 80's a 300 baud modem was state of the art (roughly 300 bits per second) ... nowadays ... 1.5 megabits per second is not uncommon with most cable services ... extraplate what the next decade may bring ...

Doesn't matter. If I went to myself as a 15yo with the Xvids of today, I'd say they were DVD quality. If I looked at them today though, Id see the faults and glitches in compression everywhere. Once HD & Blu Ray spreads a bit, it wont matter if you can get DVD on demand over the nets. It wont be deemed good enough to pay for. Leechers will make do of course, as they always have.

Youtube has been taken over by Google and now most anime is taken down it sucks, you watch a show and then copyright jumps in and gets rid of it.
