Not really, the girls are cyborgs after all. If anything, Pinocchio was over the top, considering he was just an unenhanced human, no matter how psychotic he may be.

For the most part, the anime storyline is directly taken from volumes 1 & 2 of the manga series; it veers off down a different road after the incident with Elsa & Lauro. Angelica's death is purposefully left ambiguous in the anime IMO due to the on-going manga series; there is some debate online as to whether she died or not, but personally I agree with you, poor Angelica's life had come to an end in the anime.

The anime focuses on Henrietta because the first two manga volumes focus on her too. The current 6 volumes of the manga that I have definately give all the girls equal time, & the manga is titled Gunslinger Girl, same as the anime; singular, no plural.

They also went under heavy brainwashing as part of their "conditioning."

Do you also agree that having Angelica die rather than live is a stronger ending?

Wholeheartedly. The ending of the anime was very depressing, made even moreso because you knew that it was the fate of all the girls in the end.

On a side note, vol 7 of the manga arrived today, & the original girls have definately been out on the backburner story-wise in favour of the new teens. Bugger.

One more thought on Angelica. Letting her live would go against the whole point of the series.

No, it was IF you make them mad you most likely won't live to tell about it!

The point of the series was the hopelessness of the girls, and their blind acceptance because they knew no better. None of these girls will live to adulthood.

One scene that drives this home (to me, at any rate) is when Jose takes the shot at the older guy and Henrietta finishes him off with the headshot. After taking off part of the guys head, she looks on and conveys as much emotion as someone who is checking your groceries. It's just her job.

Wow..this anime reminded of others not entirely fleshed out, but with so much more plucking of the heart strings despite it.

Think I'll buy all 3 discs. I hope they do make a second series.

I heard that one of the cable networks is currently airing it. (Not one of the nextworks my system carries.) I wonder if they cut anything? Do they digitally remove some of the blood? Henrietta does get to splatter the head of some corrupt police offical. I wonder if they show that shot.
