Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne

Rin is a green-haired, green-eyed near-sighted alcoholic lesbian who works as a private detective. She also has a killer bod. But no matter how often she is shot, tortured or dismembered to death, she always comes back alive. Rin, and her cute assistant Mimi, are immortal -- and with that territory comes enemies.

Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne is a six episode series on two discs. Each episode lasts twice as long as your normal series episode. With commercials, it must have been an hour long show when aired in Japan. I finished the first disc, and the first thing I can tell you is not to let the kids watch this one. There is blood, violence, nudity, sex -- and those are the clean parts. The storylines range from the complex to the underdeveloped, but mostly it is entertaining enough for me to watch each episode twice - in English and in Japanese with subtitles.

I will give a complete review when I finish disc 2. Meanwhile, no spoilers please.

I finished the series. I skipped the Japanese dub on the second disc.

Anyway, while the first three episodes takes place in a 10 year period in the past, the last three take place at various times in the future. The big surprise: Rin also likes men! There’s one in particular, but that would be giving away too much.

Basically, in disc 2, Rin has her long overdue confrontation with her arch-enemy Apos -- and Apos easily has the upper hand. Even immortals don’t live forever.

So my final analysis is:

It’s a good entertaining series, although some parts are a bit of a stretch for even a sci-fi fantasy anime. Still they do their best in trying to explain all the lose ends. Whether I recommend this anime or not come down to the final chapter. You really don’t know what will happen until the end. There are twists and turns to keep it interesting -- and to ensure that Rin and Mimi give us fan service one last time.

OK. I will give this one my recommendation -- but not for the kids!
